Choosing
Cross-platform or native?
This is the decision that sets cost and timeline. Most apps have a clear answer once you say what the app has to do with the device.
React Native
One codebase, JavaScript, shared with web.
The right default when your team knows JavaScript or you have a web product to share code and people with. Ships to both stores from one codebase. The Al Mahdi Community Center app is React Native and live on Google Play.
iOS + Android · Node.js or Firebase backend
Flutter
One codebase, Dart, pixel-consistent UI.
The right choice when rendering consistency across platforms matters most, or the team prefers a single typed language. We have shipped and repaired production Flutter apps, including backend and notification systems.
iOS + Android · Firebase or REST backend
Native Kotlin and Swift
When the app is the device.
Camera, sensors, background execution, hardware and platform features that cross-platform frameworks reach late. We built a silent Android auto-update in Kotlin that five previous freelancers could not; some problems are native-only.

Engineering
What we build
Cross-platform apps
React Native and Flutter apps for iOS and Android from one codebase, with navigation, state management and native modules where a platform feature needs them.
Backends for mobile
Node.js, Firebase Cloud Functions, Laravel or .NET, with REST APIs versioned so old app builds keep working after a deploy. Authentication, content, payments and analytics included.
Push notifications
Firebase Cloud Messaging with APNs, token refresh, delivery-failure handling and scheduling — the prayer-time and news alerts in the Al Mahdi app run this way.
Payments and in-app purchase
Stripe with Apple Pay and Google Pay, store in-app purchases where policy requires, donations and memberships. We handle the store policy questions as part of the build.
Real-time and media
Live streaming embeds, chat, location and maps, camera and file capture. Live YouTube streaming ships in production in the Al Mahdi app.
Store release and maintenance
Listings, screenshots, privacy declarations, signing and review handling for both stores, then crash monitoring and OS-update maintenance so the app stays live.
Applications
Mobile work we have shipped
Community app on Google Play
Al Mahdi Community Center of Toronto: prayer times with calendar and countdown, events with date-based booking, Stripe donations, membership forms, age-based Quran learning levels, live streaming and push notifications.
Live Flutter app repair
Backend and push-notification failures on a live religious app with an active user base, diagnosed and fixed quickly against a production system.
Silent Android auto-update
An update mechanism requiring no user intervention, in Kotlin, for a managed-device Android application — after five previous freelancers had been unable to solve it.
Serverless mobile backend
A scalable backend on Node.js and Firebase Cloud Functions for a SaaS platform, with data modelling and serverless API endpoints.
Video handling in Flutter
Diagnosed and resolved video playback issues in a production Flutter application.
Passwordless mobile-first auth
Auth0 passwordless phone authentication with Firebase, built for the Barker platform where sign-up had to be a phone number and nothing else.
Working together
Three ways to start
Most mobile engagements begin as one of these. We will say which fits, including when a well-built responsive web app would serve you better than a store app.
Build a new app
A scoped first release for both stores, with its backend, push notifications and payments, on a fixed quote.

Mobile development questions we get asked
React Native or Flutter?
React Native when your team knows JavaScript or you share code and people with a web product; Flutter when you want the most consistent rendering across platforms and a single-language team in Dart. Both ship production apps on iOS and Android from one codebase. We build in both and will not steer you to one for our convenience. The wrong choice is usually native for a product that does not need it.
When does native development actually make sense?
When the app is the device: heavy camera or sensor work, background processing the OS restricts, hardware integration, or platform features cross-platform frameworks reach late. A silent auto-update on Android, for instance, needed Kotlin. For most business and consumer apps, cross-platform gets you to both stores faster at lower cost.
How long does a mobile app take to build?
A focused first release with authentication, a core workflow and push notifications is typically eight to twelve weeks, plus store review. Payments, offline support, real-time features and admin tooling extend that. The app is only part of it: most mobile products need a backend, and we build that alongside rather than leaving it as a surprise.
Do you build the backend as well?
Yes. Node.js or Firebase Cloud Functions for most mobile products, Laravel or .NET where the app joins an existing system. Authentication, push notifications, payments, content and analytics all need a server side, and an app without a well-built backend is a demo.
How do push notifications work, and why do they break?
Firebase Cloud Messaging on both platforms, with APNs behind it on iOS. They break when tokens go stale, when the backend does not handle delivery failures, or when the app’s permission handling is wrong. We have repaired notification systems on live apps, and we build them with token refresh and failure handling from the start.
Can you take payments and donations in the app?
Yes. Stripe for cards, Apple Pay and Google Pay; in-app purchases through the stores where the platform rules require it. The Al Mahdi app takes Stripe donations and membership payments in production. We handle the store policy questions, which are often the harder part.
Can you fix or extend an existing app?
Often that is how we start. We have taken on live apps to repair backend and notification failures, add features, and address store rejections. We audit the codebase and the crash reports first, then fix in priority order. A rewrite is proposed only when we can show the numbers.
How do you handle app store submission?
We prepare both stores: listings, screenshots, privacy declarations, review notes and the signing setup. Rejections usually come from privacy policy gaps, payment policy or permissions explanations, and we have been through those cycles. The app is not done until it is live.
Can the app work offline?
Yes, with a local store and a sync layer that reconciles changes when the connection returns. It is a real engineering cost, so we ask what genuinely has to work offline: reading cached content is cheap, editing with conflict resolution is not. We design for what you need rather than everything.
Will we own the app and the store accounts?
Yes. The app is published under your developer accounts, the code lives in your repository, and the backend runs in your cloud. You can hand it to another team at any point without asking us.
